Holidays on an Alpine farm in South Tyrol

Our Oberversanthof, nestled high above Naturno, is anything but ordinary. Instead of typical farm animals, llamas and alpacas roam freely here, enjoying the fresh mountain air—just like us and our guests. Perhaps it’s the breathtaking views, the crisp alpine breeze, or the deep sense of tranquility that makes this place so special. These same qualities likely drew our ancestors here, despite the challenges of farming on such steep terrain. Even today, working this land requires dedication, but it remains a truly extraordinary place.

The history of the Oberversanthof runs deep. The original farm burned down nearly a century ago, but the land found new caretakers in Michael’s great-uncles, Tobias and Luis. They cultivated berries and kept bee colonies, producing honey high above the valley. Even then, innovation and a forward-thinking spirit shaped life on the mountain.

From a young age, Michael’s mother, Elisabeth, would run up to the Oberversanthof nearly every day to help her uncles on the farm. Years later, she and her husband, Thomas, made it their home, raising their children amidst the breathtaking landscape. Together, they dedicated themselves to developing the farm, always thinking beyond conventions and embracing new ideas.

At the Alpine farm Oberversanthof and at arduus, fresh drinking water comes from our own spring, ensuring top-quality water. A water turbine generates electricity year-round, complemented by photovoltaic systems installed on the farm. Thanks to Elisabeth and Thomas’s pioneering spirit, the mountain farm became entirely energy self-sufficient years ago, long before sustainability became a trend.

Though perched quietly at the entrance of the Val Senales, where birdsong fills the air, life at Oberversanthof never stands still. The construction of arduus marks yet another milestone, an architectural blend of nature, design, and Alpine tradition, creating a retreat where guests can breathe deeply, unwind, and kick back.
