Self-sufficient Alpine farm

The story of how the Oberversanthof secured its water supply—and what it means for us today.

Decades ago, when the hydroelectric power station was built in Naturno, the construction of tunnels redirected water sources, drying up many natural springs that local farmers relied on for irrigation. To compensate, farmers were given a choice: free electricity for life or a guaranteed share of water for irrigation. At Oberversanthof and the neighbouring farms, they wisely chose the share of water, a decision that continues to benefit us today. This water is essential not only for irrigation but also for generating electricity. Thanks to this, the Oberversanthof became energy self-sufficient long ago. When designing arduus, we made it a priority to follow this sustainable path. With a limited but reliable energy supply from our own production, we focused on optimising its use. By intelligently linking our power sources and prioritising energy efficiency, we’ve ensured that arduus remains fully self-sufficient - just like the farm that inspired it.
